Reduce Heart Disease and Health Care Costs With a Worksite Wellness Program

Boston University School of Medicine and Boston University School of Public Health researchers have evaluated the impact of an employee sponsored diet and exercise program. The program was an internet based diet and exercise program and was found to be effective at lowering healthcare costs in high-risk employees, specifically those with cardiac risk factors. The findings of this study have been released in the Journal of Medical Internet Research.

Study researchers looked at whether or not an internet-based program impacted healthcare costs. Participants and their spouses were analyzed for 12 months prior to the program and analysis continued through the 12 month program launch. How often the program website was accessed was factored into the study results. The study also focused on a subgroup of 735 individuals at high cardiac risk (high blood pressure and high cholesterol levels).

For the entire study group the internet-based program was not linked to lower healthcare costs. However, the sub-group cardiovascular group showed an average savings of $827 for the study year. The individuals in this group lost weight, lowered blood pressure, and had improved eating habits.

Researchers also reported the more times a participant at high cardiac risk visited the program website healthcare costs decreased. Each additional visit to the website was associated with a $55 savings in healthcare costs.

Health insurance premiums have drastically risen over the past 10 years, placing an increased burden on employer sponsored health insurance programs as well as employees. Providing a low cost internet-based nutrition and exercise behavior modification program is one way to counteract the rising costs.

Eating the Right Foods - A Diet Solution

My diet solutions have provided the most healthful results when I am paying attention not so much to the amount I eat, as to what I eat.

Food is as natural as breathing air, and as necessary. When we are living our healthiest and most active life, the amount of food isn’t a concern. If we have developed the habit of eating food that nourishes the body, the energy level we achieve will provide a lifestyle that is about doing, not about eating.

If the best diet plan is ignored in favor of convenience food, or food-on-the-run, the result can be a body that responds with sluggishness. Because the correct nutrients aren’t received by the body, the body cries out for ever more food, even if we are ingesting more calories than we need.

When the hunger-pangs result in ingestion of more non-nourishing food, the downward spiral is intensified.

My energy level soars when I am paying attention to a sound diet solution program. Because I feel better and more alive, my time is spent in activities that are interesting and fulfilling. When I feel this fantastic, why would I do anything other than pay attention to the diet that results in this change?

Weight loss meals don’t mean meals that are less enjoyable. Weight loss meals means eating to not only satisfy my taste buds, but to transform my body into the temple of health that will house my spirit and allow me to live the life that is my birthright.

Since I am paying attention to the diet solution program, my energy level has increased to allow me to feel the enjoyment of carefree and easy movement. I would prefer to be busy at the activities that make me feel good. Lack of exercise is a joke when I’m feeling this great.

The fact that my clothing fits better is nothing but another plus. But the real gift has been an increased energy level and enjoyment of life.

Need I mention that the people around me have also noticed the happier me?

And eating the right food, not necessarily less food, has been the reason for the transformation. The diet solution program has certainly not been about denying myself, it has been about honoring myself.
